Sneak Peek: Skatepark Museumplein

Museumplein has a long history as a skate spot. In 1997, a metre-high ramp was opened on the square. The three-and-a-half-metre-high halfpipe was quite intimidating for many skaters and BMXers, so the park was little used. A few years later, the Zuid district council decided to design a new and accessible skate park. In consultation with skaters, the park took shape: a steel mini-ramp about 15 metres wide with quarterpipes of different heights, a spine and speed bump. After the park opened - among others by Dutch rap group The Opposites - many years of skating and riding BMX followed. Many high airs later, even this skate park is dated and last year the municipality of Amsterdam presented its final plans for a new skate park. Meanwhile, the guys from Nine Yards are hard at work building a beautiful park on Museumplein. We will be able to enjoy BMX again at this iconic spot in Amsterdam soon!
