Pilot BMX Traffic Lights in Amsterdam

Pilot BMX Traffic Lights in Amsterdam

Update (April 2): this pilot was an April Fools’ joke.
But honestly, shouldn’t this exist? 👀

After years of pushing for more skateparks and more space for urban sports in Amsterdam, Soulcycle is now involved in a new visual pilot around popular BMX locations in the city.

With BMX traffic increasing and growing activity around locations such as the shop on Weteringschans and the Museumplein area, selected spots are now being used to test adapted traffic signaling designed with BMX riders in mind.

The pilot has been developed as a first visual concept and is intended to contribute to stronger recognition, smoother flow, and increased safety around busy crossings and urban sports hotspots.

Pilot focus

01 — Flow

A more logical and smoother routing for BMX traffic around popular spots and crossing points.

02 — Lines

More recognizable and readable movement lines in the streetscape, aligned with the way riders move through the city.

03 — Landing

A safer and clearer traffic situation around locations where young cyclists and BMX riders often gather.

First pilot area

The first visual rollout focuses on locations around:

  • Weteringschans
  • Museumplein
  • surrounding urban sports routes

First concept rollout

The first concept visuals were developed as part of a broader exploration into how urban infrastructure can better respond to the growth of urban sports in Amsterdam.

This initial concept shows what adapted signaling could look like in places where BMX traffic is becoming an increasingly visible part of the streetscape.
